This is the XO 1236, the only tenor bass trombone currently available from brass instrument maker XO.
While the model number can be further subdivided based on subtle specification differences, this particular model is the 1236L-T. One of its specifications is an open wrap, which refers to the coiling of the tuning slides. Normally, a coiling called a traditional wrap is used, but this type of wrap involves a complex bending of the tubing, which creates resistance to the air. The open wrap was designed to reduce this resistance. With its protruding tube appearance, the open wrap reduces air resistance by keeping the tubing as straight as possible, providing an open and free blowing feel. Its light blowing feel allows for more nuanced expression.
Another major feature is the axial flow valve. While commonly seen rotary valves are cylindrical, axial flow valves are conical. The air passage in a rotary valve is bent almost 90 degrees, which cannot be described as smooth. In contrast, axial flow valves smooth the air passage and, by making it closer to a perfect circle, allow for a blowing feel where the sound projects well. This results in a blowing feel similar to a tenor trombone, making it easy to play and producing a bright sound.
Furthermore, this model features a removable leadpipe. There are three types of leadpipes that can be attached, and two of them are included with the instrument. Both are 200mm in length and made of brass and silver, respectively. When played with the brass leadpipe, it produces a gentle, cohesive sound. Being a softer material, it has a warmer tone compared to silver. In contrast, the silver leadpipe produces a clearer sound. It gives the impression of a sharp sound that projects far. This would be useful in situations where a powerful sound is desired, such as in jazz or solos. This model offers the advantage of enjoying two different tonal qualities with just one purchase.
This model showcases the manufacturer's meticulous attention to detail in various parts, such as the main tuning slide likely being made of copper and other material variations.
